4 Smart Ways To Save On Your Heating Oil Costs

by Joann Freeman

Using oil is one of the more efficient ways to heat up your home. That doesn't mean that heating oil is cheap though. There are multiple things you can do to save money on heating oil costs.

Compare Prices Between Different Providers

Don't just stick with the same supplier for your heating supplies. Each year call the providers in your area and find out how much their oil costs. Do a little comparison shopping and figure out which heating company offers you the best deal on oil. If you find a provider that offers you a better deal, take that deal to your current provider and see if they will match the price of their competitor. If you can get your current provider to match the lower cash heating oil price you found, and you like their service, you can stay with your current provider and enjoy lower prices.

Fill Your Tank in the Off Season

Oil prices are dictated by demand. That means in the winter when everyone needs oil, the oil is going to cost more. If you use up all the oil in your tank in the winter or spring time, fill your tank up in the summer. You should enjoy lower prices when you fill your tank up in the summer versus waiting to fill it up again in the winter.

Keep Track of Fees

Next, make sure you keep track of all the fees that you are being charged. Hidden fees can really add up. Things such as premium delivery charges for deliveries made during the weekend, is something that you can avoid. Be sure to ask about any hidden or extra charges and see what you can do to avoid those. You don't want to add expenses to your heating bill that you can avoid.

Reduce the Amount of Oil You Use

Finally, try to find ways to reduce the amount of oil that you use. Get your furnace inspected on a yearly basis to ensure it is running as efficiently as possible. Touch up the caulking around your home to cut down on drafts, and make sure your weather stripping is in good condition. Start using a smart thermostat to control the temperature in your home. These simple steps can help you reduce the amount of oil you need to use.

Save money on heating costs next winter by looking around for a better rate, fill up your tank in the off-season, try to avoid unnecessary fees, and work to reduce the amount of oil you use.
